The Maisky Trio— started by the famous concert cellist Mischa Maisky brings a fresh surge of vitality to the legendary Maisky musical lineage. Now featuring the electrifying Ukrainian cellist Aleksey Shadrin alongside violinist Sascha Maisky and pianist Lily Maisky, their playing combines familial synchronicity with Shadrin’s fiery tone and magnetic presence. The trio ignites the stage with performances that are as soulful as they are daring. Regular guests at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and Wigmore Hall in London, the Maisky Trio's playing is marked by vibrant colors, fearless expressivity, and a shared spirit of discovery that transforms every concert into a vivid, emotionally charged journey. Together, they carry forward the Maisky tradition with renewed brilliance and a boldly contemporary voice.
Program:
Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 1 in B major opens this program with its rare blend of youthful ardor and mature refinement—a work first conceived in his early twenties and later transformed into a richly textured, warmly lyrical masterpiece. Its expansive melodies, tender inner movements, and finely crafted finale create a world of intimacy and sweep.

Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, written in 1944 amid personal loss and the horrors of war, offers a stark and gripping counterbalance: from its eerie opening cello harmonics to its biting scherzo, wrenching lament, and defiant final dance inspired by Jewish themes, the trio stands as a raw, unforgettable testament to grief and resilience. Together, these two works chart a journey from romantic depth to modern existential intensity, revealing how differently—and powerfully—music can express the human condition.
